The 1.8 Billion Opportunity

At the time IBM has acquired Coremetrics in June of 2010, Coremetrics was delivering web analytics capabilities to more than 2,100 global brands across a wide range of industries including retail, financial services, media and publishing, travel and hospitality and education. Customers include Holiday Inn, PETCO, 1-800 Flowers, Office Depot, Victoria’s Secret, Virgin Atlantic Airways and Seton Hall University.

In a blog post, (via Marketing Pilgrim) former IBM executive Mike Moran describes the purchase as a smart move, especially in the wake of Adobe’s purchase of Coremetrics rival Omniture (NSDQ: OMTR) last fall:

“Buying Coremetrics assures IBM of a way that their clients can keep their data and allows IBM to analyze it for them.”

IBM says in a release that Coremetrics will become part of its “application and integration middleware portfolio which provides the backbone of transaction processing on the Web and powers many of the world’s leading retail sites… The Coremetrics acquisition will enhance IBM’s ability to help businesses rapidly gain intelligence into social networks and online media sources through a cloud-based delivery model, and use this insight to create smarter, more effective marketing campaigns.” (ref)

Although the financial terms were not disclosed, Coremetrics’ closest rival, Omniture, was acquired by Adobe for approximately $1.8 billion. At DesignCaffeine, we are very proud to have played a role in the new Coremetrics interface design of the web interface and iPhone mobile app, and helped to add tremendous value in the UX design of the new analytics platform on the web and mobile.

The Optimal Marketing Analytics Platform

The User Experience that transforms how marketing is measured. UX design of drag-and-drop desktop Flex UI and iPhone app. But convenient, clear UI is just the baseline. On this solid foundation, we created a novel comparative Click Path analysis tool that blows away the competition, novel applications of Heat Map & Funnel chart, Sparklines, Bullet Graphs, Box Plots and a new method of chart annotations inspired by business data wizard Edward Tufte.

Greg thinks out of the box and always offers revolutionary ideas not only in the area of user experience but also in areas where we can apply backend algorithms to provide deeper insights to end users. It’s always a pleasure to brain storm with Greg and he is very responsive to customer needs. I look forward to work with Greg on future projects as well.”

Insights Everywhere

To paraphrase John Lennon, “business is what happens while you are busy making plans”. Taking into account today’s business reality, we knew that we had to deliver the same quality of insights on mobile as well as web, to provide decision makers with critical tools on the go. Taking on this hefty challenge, we helped Coremetrics design a top-rated IBM Analytics Mobile App:
